Construction Site Operations (A5)

Updated over a month ago

As per EN 15978, the site impacts from construction works are reported in the A5 module. You can read more about life cycle stages (modules) here.

One Click LCA enables to add construction site operation related impacts using project-specific data or use our climate zone average impacts.

How do I fill in the Construction Site Operations query?

For some certification schemes you need to add specifically defined site impacts, e.g. the BREEAM UK NC 2014 scheme requires the inclusion of fuel used for the excavation works. In such cases include only what is necessary and leave other questions empty. If you have no specific scheme requirements you can include the Construction Site Operations (A5) data based on the type of information you have available to you.

Do you have project-specific information available?

Yes, I have project-specific information available. If you have project-specific information available your project is most likely already constructed, it's being constructed or you have good estimations of the on-site usage. In those cases, fill in only:

  • Energy use on the site

  • Water use on the site

  • Waste generated on the site

  • Additional trips for transport to the construction site (assigned to A4 in the results)

No, I do not have project-specific information available. If you do not have any information, you are likely still in the early stage design phases. You can then make use of a scenario to estimate the emissions. In those cases, fill in only:

  • Construction site scenarios

No, I do not have project specific information available, and I have access to a tool that reports on material wastage % in the building materials query.

If you use a tool that will have a wastage percentage in the building material query, then be careful with the selected scenarios. If you wish to use this, you can still use a scenario; however, ensure you pick a scenario which does not include material wastage. A scenario that you could choose is, e.g. Average energy and fuel use in construction site - Nordics (either normal or biodiesel variant).

Note: If you are using a calculation tool which includes wastage percentages on the building material query (E.g. GLA, NS3720 or NollCO2), ensure you are not double reporting the A5 emissions. When you already have included waste emissions, you should not use a scenario which includes material waste as well.

What do I fill in the different sections with?

Construction site scenarios (climate zone averages)

You can select a scenario when you have no project-specific information available and want to estimate the A5 emissions, when you select a scenario ensure you then fill in the building area.

Note: Make sure you fill in the building area (e.g. GIFA) and not the construction site area as that will over-report the estimated A5 emissions.

Available scenarios are:

  • Average scenarios which include average impacts per climate region for electricity, fuel consumption and waste production.

  • Nordic countries have available average impacts for different energy impacts.

  • Excavation per M3 of mass removed or amount of fuel consumed is also an option.

Note: Excavation is not included in the average climate scenarios. If you wish you include excavation as well, you will need to add a second scenario for this.

Deconstruction/Demolition (C1) scenario

If you are using the new End Of Life Modeling for your project, the C1 stage impacts are added in this section by selecting the scenario from the drop menu and using the building area in m2 as the input.

C1 stage is included in the Material-locked end of life scenarios, so leave this section empty if you have selected this calculation method in the LCA Parameters of your project.

Energy use on the site

In this section you can fill in the site electricity, district heating and fuel consumption.

Additionally, you can report on the machine hours as well. Under the machine hours query you can report on heavy machinery, however also smaller types of equipment such as generators.

Water use on the site

In this section, you report on the water consumed on the construction site.

Waste generated on the site

In this section you can fill in any waste which is generated during the construction process.

Note: If you are using a calculation tool which uses a 'wastage percentage' on the building material query, ensure you are not double reporting the emissions.

Additional trips for the transport to the construction site

Additional transportation impacts that can't be included on the Building materials query page, which only allows two, can be accounted for in this section. These related impacts are then assigned to module A4, unlike the other sections in this query, which are assigned to A5.
