The private and project classification features allow you to determine a custom classification system for all inputs on your projects. Private classifications are connected to your company account and can be used in multiple projects. Project classifications can be set up in individual projects and can be used by all project users irrespective of whether they belong to the same organization or not.
Results can be displayed per these classifications similarly to tool-specific building part classifications. These custom classifications can for instance be used to show results for different sections of multi-purpose building types as well as different phases/facilities of the manufacturing chain in product calculations. However, you can adapt them for your own use cases.
Please note:
Project Classifications is a new feature available only in the new user interface of the data input page and is not supported in the old interface.
An updated version of the Private Classifications feature is available in the new data input interface. Both the updated version and the corresponding feature in the old data input interface is described in separate sections in this article.
Project classifications
Pre-requisites for using project classifications are:
Having an Expert license
All users in a project have access to project classifications irrespective of whether they belong to the same organization or not. Only users with manager rights in the project with the relevant license are able to configure the project classifications.
Set up your project classifications
You can use project classifications in the "Project classification" column. When first starting a new project, the option "No classification" will be chosen by default.
In order to use the Project classifications, we first need to set up our classification system. This is done by clicking on the "More Actions button" and "Manage project classification" in the top-right corner of the screen.
You have the options to manually add your classifications or to import them using Excel. You will also be able to export your list of classifications, for instance if you want to quickly import the same classification system to a new project.
To manually add your classifications, click on the "Add classification" button in the top-right corner, or right-click to bring up the same action. A new classification row will be added where you can specify the name of each classification option.
If you instead want to import data from Excel, press the "Import" button in the top-right corner and select the Excel file you want to import.
The Excel file only needs to contain the list of classifications, for instance:
Decide if you want to override your existing project classification system, or not, using the check-box. Confirm that you want to import your data. The classification system will then be uploaded to your project.
Save your classifications and go back to your design. You can always go back and edit your classifications later, including changing the name of each classification or changing their order using this field.
Use your project classifications
Back in the design, you can now use your classification system. The available options in the Project classification column are now customised according to your specified classification options.
On the Results page, you will be able to use your project classifications in the Graph section. Select to use the Project classifications:
The classification system will then be used in graphs and the respective data table.
Private/company classifications in the new data input interface
Set up your private classifications
Main users of a company account can access Private Classifications from the company account page. Open your company account and navigate to the 'Data management' tab. Click on 'Edit' company classifications to access and edit existing private/company classifications or to create new classifications.
On the page that opens, click on '+ Create classification list':
In the window that opens, you can create your private classification system.
In the field 'List name', write the name of your classification system.
You can add classification options to your classification system either manually or by importing an Excel file.
To enter classification options manually, click on '+ Add Classification' to add as many options as you want. The options will appear as separate rows in the table. In the example above, the classifications are named Options 1-6. However, you can name the options freely.
You can also import a classification system via the 'Import' button. You will be prompted to choose the Excel file that you want to import. The format of the Excel file can simply be a column with the various classification options that you want to import, like this:
After selecting the file, you will see a preview of the classification options you are importing. With the checkbox 'Override existing classifications', you can choose if you want the imported classifications to be appended to any existing classification options in the classification system you are importing the data to (keep the box unchecked if this is the case), or if you want to override the existing classifications (check the box if this is the case). When you have reviewed the classifications, you can proceed by selecting 'Confirm Import'.
You can also 'Export' your private classification system in Excel format. For instance if you want to share the system with another user not on your company account or save the options outside of the cloud. If you go back to your company classification list, you will see all your company classifications (it is possible to have multiple separate classification systems).
You can right-click on each classification to bring up the following action menu:
Edit: This allows you to open and edit an existing classification system.
Delete: This will delete the classification system.
Duplicate: This will create an identical copy of the classification system. This can be useful if you for instance want to keep the original classification system but create a new similar system by editing the copy.
Export: This will export the list of your classification systems to Excel. Please note that in order to export the classification options within one of the classification systems, first click on 'Edit' and Export the classification options from the individual classification system instead.
Use your private classifications
You can use your private/company classification system in your designs. By clicking on the “More Actions” button in your design, you can select which company classification list to use.
The private classification system can now be found in a separate column in the data input page:
Private classifications in the import process
You can also use your company classifications in the import process. In step 2 “Import settings” in the import process, you can choose which of your company classifications to use in each import.
Results
On the Results page, you will be able to view your classifications in the Graph section. Select "Company classifications". The classification system will then be used in graphs and respective data tables.
Private classifications in the old data input interface
The legacy version of the private classification feature can still be used in the old data input interface and is described below.
Pre-requisites for using private classifications are:
Having an Expert license
Having created a company account (how to set up a company account)
To add, publish (make available to others on the company account) or edit private classifications, you need to be the 'Main user' of the company account (multiple users can be set as ‘Main users’).
The main user of the company account can access Private Classifications from the Company Account page.
Open your company account and navigate to the 'Data management' tab
Click on 'Edit' in the row for Private Classifications to access and edit existing private classifications or create new private classifications.
Download the Excel template
Download the Excel template for determining the classifications. Enter each classification under the 'Classification Answers' column on a separate row.
Upload the Excel template
First, fill in the name of the private classification system. Then click on 'Choose File' to select the Excel template with the private classification answers. Finally, click on 'Upload'. You can then rename the classification by clicking on the pencil icon next to the name of the classification list.
Once the classification list is uploaded, users on your company account can select the classification for any inputs on their projects.
On the results page, you are then able to change the classification to the Private Classifications of your company to see the results divided per these classifications.
Frequently asked questions
How to expand your private classification list?
If you have already created a private classification list and want to add new options to this list, then this is possible. Make sure that you do not edit existing classifications in your list, as this will erase the classifications you may have assigned to materials previously.
Download your classification Excel, add new options to the list, then reupload this.
How can I assign private classifications automatically with my Excel import?
In order to include your private classifications with your Excel imports, you will need to do two things.
Add a column to your Excel called 'ORGANIZATIONSPECIFICCLASSIFICATION'
Add the options which you have assigned as your private classifications (as shown above). You can find these by going to your private classifications, clicking on the spyglass and copying the 'Answer Id' entries.
Navigate to your company account, click on private classifications and click on the spyglass.
After you have clicked on the spyglass, the classification list will open. Copy the needed 'Answer Ids' and use these as your classification options in Excel.
