Sverige - Miljöbyggnad 4.0

Updated this week

Miljöbyggnad is a Swedish certification scheme for buildings. The LCA for Miljöbyggnad 4.0 calculation tool (included in all Swedish licenses) is used to calculate the LCA of the building materials according to the Miljöbyggnad 4.0 guidance. The calculation results can be used for indicator 4 'Klimatpåverkan' (Climate Impact) in the Miljöbyggnad 4.0 scheme.

The Miljöbyggnad 4.0 tool calculates the climate impact for the full lifecycle from A to D stages and can thus also be used for other types of LCA and climate assessment not directly linked to the Miljöbyggnad scheme.

In the MB 4.0 tool, default transportation distances, transportation profiles and wastage factors come from Boverket's database (as required by Klimatdeklaration), making it easy to add both the Klimatdeklaration and Miljöbyggnad tools to the same design.

Life-Cycle Scope in the Tool

The calculation tool includes the life cycle modules A1-A5, B1-B7, C1-C4, and D.

Certification Scope

In Indicator 4 Climate Impact in the MB 4.0 certification scheme, the climate impact of a building should be reported in kg CO2e / m2 gross floor area. The climate calculations shall be performed in accordance with Boverket’s requirements for the Swedish Klimatdeklaration legislation.

Three different grades with different requirements and scope can be achieved: Bronze, Silver and Gold. The requirements for each grade are:

Bronze:

  • The climate impact of the building for the life cycle modules A1-A5 are reported in accordance with Boverket’s regulations for Klimatdeklaration.

Silver:

  • The grade Bronze is achieved.

  • The maximum climate impact of modules A1-A5 can not exceed certain threshold values for the relevant building type.

Gold:

  • The grade Silver is achieved.

  • The maximum climate impact of modules A1-A5 can not exceed certain (stricter) threshold values for the relevant building type.

  • The climate impact of the building for the full lifecycle should be calculated.

For the grades Bronze and Silver in Miljöbyggnad 4.0, the Klimatdeklaration tool in One Click LCA can be used. This tool is customised to Boverket’s requirements, including the calculation of A1-A5 results and scope coverage (täckningsgrad) as required also in Miljöbyggnad. Guidance for the Klimatdeklaration tool can be found here.

For Gold, A1-A5, B1-B7 and C1-C4 should be reported. The assumptions for B1-B7 and C1-C4 should also be described when handing in the results for certification. The calculations should be done according to the standard SS-EN 15978:2011. The service life of the building should be set to 50 years. The D stage is outside of the system boundary in the MB 4.0 certification, but is calculated in the tool.

Data Scope in the Tool

EPDs according to both EN15804+A1 and EN15804+A2 can be found in the tool.

When performing calculations according to Klimatdeklaration, the accepted data is EPDs and Boverket generic data. EPDs and Boverket data are also available in the Miljöbyggnad 4.0 tool. Some other generic data is also available in the tool for increased flexibility for the user.

As mentioned above, when specifically doing a Klimatdeklaration for A1-A5 which is also a requirement for Miljöbyggnad, the Klimatdeklaration tool can be used. The Miljöbyggnad 4.0 tool can easily be added to the same design, and the quantities already entered in the Klimatdeklaration tool will be visible also in the Miljöbyggnad tool, making it easy to expand the calculation to the other lifecycle stages.

Miljöbyggnad 4.0 tool can also be used as a generic LCA tool for climate calculations for the full lifecycle A, B, C and D.

The below guidance explains how to perform calculations in the MB 4.0 tool:

Create a project and select the right calculation tool

Create a building project and select “LCA for Miljöbyggnad 4.0” as the chosen calculation tool.

Create your first design and set up the LCA parameters

Set up your first design and go through the LCA parameters if relevant to your assessment.

Note that not all LCA parameters will influence the results. The default values for transportation distances, transportation profiles, and wastage factors in the MB 4.0 tool are always based on values from Boverket, but they can be changed by the user for each material in the building materials query.

Material manufacturing localization is disabled in the tool.

Check the mandatory scope

Check the mandatory scope of required elements from the Miljöbyggnad 4.0 guidance documents or any other guidance you are following.

Fill in the building area

Fill in the Building area question form by entering the Bruttoareal (BTA) Sweden. If you want to see Carbon Heroes Benchmark results, also add the GIFA (Gross Internal Floor Area).

Input required material data

Fill in your project information in One Click LCA by entering the design either manually or by importing your data (see different import options here; guidance for data import can be found here). If you need help finding the right datasets for your building materials, check our guidance pages here.

After importing or manually adding the material data, set the following parameters for each material in the 'Building Materials' query:

  • Choose the correct building part classification for each material from the 'BSAB Byggdelar' dropdown menu. This can be done also within the import process. This parameter is used for showing the results per building part in the result graphics.

  • Set the transportation distance and method from the manufacturing site to the construction site manually if you have project-specific data for these values.

  • Adjust the Service life column with project-specific data if you wish and if you have the data available.

  • Adjust the Wastage columns with project-specific data if you wish and if you have the data available.

  • If you want to include repair, fill in the repair rate in the column Repair/year (B3).

  • The default EOL process depends on the choice made in the LCA parameters, and can be changed. Row-by-row end of life can be edited if you have an Expert level license.

  • If you have reused materials, check the boxes “Reused material” (impacts from initial manufacturing A1-A3 and A5 will be ignored) and/or “Locally reused” (impacts from A4 will be ignored).

Energy Consumption

Fill in the annual energy consumption by choosing the local energy data and inputting annual consumption based on your energy calculations. Only the energy bought from external sources will be reported. Any renewable energy produced in the building and exported to the grid will not be considered in your calculation totals but declared as a benefit of the building (D stage).

Water Consumption

Fill in the annual water consumption.

Construction Site Operations

Add your site impacts either by choosing a suitable construction site scenario in sections 1 and 2 or by adding project-specific energy, water, waste etc. into the other sections.

Emissions and Removals

Input any refrigerants and concrete carbonisation if you wish to account for these in your calculation.

Maintenance

Add maintenance scenarios or other activities related to maintenance if you wish to account for these in your calculation.

Calculation Period

Add the assessment period or expected life of the building. If you are following the Miljöbyggnad 4.0 framework, the calculation period should be set to 50 years for the grade Gold.

View and download LCA results

Navigate to the results page. The result tables show the global warming potential result distribution per life cycle stage, expressed in the unit kg CO2e/m2.

The top results table shows the results with conservative Boverket data (including the 25 % conservative top-up factor for Boverket data). The second results table shows the results with typical Boverket data (without the 25 % conservative top-up factor for Boverket data).

Click on 'more actions', and download the detailed report. In the One Click LCA results report, both conservative and typical values are shown for each material.

In the Graphs section, it is also possible to choose between conservative and typical results for Boverket data. Several different types of graphs can be used for analysis of the results and downloaded.
