Introduction
The EPD Quality Checker is a powerful tool designed to help you identify and resolve potential issues in your Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) before you submit it to for verification. By providing automated feedback on the completeness and plausibility of your Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data, the checker helps you save time, reduce verification costs, and minimize the risk of EPD rejection.
The feature consists of two main components, accessible via tabs:
Completeness Checker
Plausibility Checker
How to Use the EPD Quality Checker
You can access the checker's feedback in two main ways: by manually opening it from the results page or automatically when submitting your EPD to the EPD Hub.
Manual Access from the Results Page
You can review the checks at any time. After calculating your project's results, navigate to the "Results" page. You will see the EPD Quality Checker section, which displays a summary of items that may need to be fixed or reviewed. Click the 'Open details' button to go to the main checker page.
Reviewing Issues During Submission
The EPD Quality Checker runs automatically when you submit a project to the EPD Hub for verification. A pop-up window will appear, summarizing any issues found and prompting you to take action.
For most tools: You will see a warning with two options. You can choose to proceed with the submission to the EPD Hub despite the warnings, though you may be required to provide a justification.
For End-to-End verified (E2E) tools (e.g., Luminaire or Electronics): Because EPDs from these tools can be automatically published, resolving all issues identified by the EPD Quality Checker is mandatory. The system will prevent you from submitting the EPD to the EPD Hub until all checks have passed.
Completeness Checker Tab
The Completeness Checker verifies that your EPD modeling is correct, internally consistent, and complete before submission.
As shown in the image above, the checker reviews:
Balance Values: This checks that the inputs and outputs for mass and energy are balanced within an acceptable range.
Declared Unit and Materials Mass Alignment: This compares the mass of the declared unit with the total mass of the raw material inputs to ensure they are consistent.
Missing Files: This section verifies that all required supporting files, such as diagrams and logos, have been uploaded.
Plausibility Checker Tab
The Plausibility Checker helps you judge if your calculated environmental impact results are reasonable. It benchmarks your project's results against data from a large database of comparable EPDs, flagging any values that deviate significantly from the norm.
When reviewing this tab, you will see:
Confidence Interval: This graph shows your project's result (as a horizontal line) compared to the typical range for similar EPDs. The green bar represents the range where 90% of comparable EPDs in the database fall.
Difference: This column shows how much your result deviates from the typical 90% range, expressed as a percentage. This calculation is only shown for results that fall outside the typical range.
Supported Tools
The EPD Quality Checker is currently available for the following tools:
EPD Generator for EPD Hub V3 and EPD Hub North America
End-to-end verified EPD Generators (e.g., for Luminaires or Electronics)
