Running Simulations and Comparing Designs

Sustainable Planner lets you run embodied carbon and microclimate simulations on multiple designs, then compare the results side by side to identify the most performant option.

Create design alternatives

From the design manager, duplicate an existing design or create a new one to explore a different design direction.

Run simulations

1. Select the designs you want to test using the checkboxes.

2. Press "Run simulation" in the upper-right corner.

3. Choose the LCA methodology you want. This is linked to the LCA methodology you chose when starting your project.

4. Choose which thermal analysis you would like to run. The number of hot days, wet bulb days, and tropical nights is precalculated for your location using Copernicus ERA5 data.

You can run multiple simulations in parallel.

Tip: Track the status of each simulation using the status shown on its card.

Review the results

Once simulations are complete, you have two ways to explore the results:

  • Press "Detailed results" to check the full results and compare up to 3 designs side by side.

  • Press "3D results" to return to your model and see the results directly on it.

The summary view

The summary view gives you a side-by-side comparison across all selected designs: thermal comfort, CO₂ estimation, and a full metrics table at a glance.

Use the dropdowns below the summary to explore the details, including the ability to adjust timesteps for microclimate data.

Compare designs in a table

Use the Table view to compare up to 3 designs at once across gross floor area, façade surface, physiological equivalent temperature, and CO₂e per square meter, each shown against a baseline.

View results directly on your model

Select 3D results to see thermal comfort or wind data overlaid on your model. Use the timestamp slider to review how conditions change over the course of the simulated day.

Keep results current

If you modify a design after running a simulation, thermal comfort results may no longer reflect the current state of the design. Run a new simulation to keep your comparison accurate.

What the simulations measure

Embodied carbon

An early-stage carbon estimate powered by One Click LCA's carbon data, calculated from your selected LCA method, building typology, and early design assumptions. Estimates use global averages and exclude detailed systems such as MEP. Use them for early comparison between scenarios, and move to Carbon Designer 3D when a concept warrants deeper analysis.

Microclimate (ENVI-met)

Site-level environmental indicators including wind speed, air temperature, mean radiant temperature, relative humidity, Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET), and Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI). Animated simulation results are available within individual scenario views.

Getting help

If a simulation shows a Failed badge on a design card, contact One Click LCA support and share the project ID so the team can investigate.
