BREEAM Infrastructure v6

Updated over a month ago

The BREEAM Infrastructure tool is made in compliance with the BREEAM Infrastructure assessments (formerly CEEQUAL). The calculation tool can be used to achieve the following credits.

  • 7.3.1 Life-Cycle Assessment (Max 100p)

  • 7.3.2 Environmental Product Declarations (17p)

  • 7.7.1 Energy and carbon emissions reduction for operation (45p)

  • 7.7.2 Implementation of energy and carbon reductions for operations (Max 70p)

  • 7.8.1 Embodied Water (25p)

Additionally, it can still be used for the following CEEQUAL credits:

  • CEEQUAL v5: 2.4.1, 2.4.2, 8.2.1, 8.2.2, 8.5.2, 8.6.1

  • CEEQUAL v4.1 and above: 7.1.1, 7.1.2, 7.1.3, 7.1.4

Life-Cycle & Results Scope

The calculation includes the life cycle modules of A1-A5 and B1-B7, C1-C4, and D. The results include a range of environmental indicators as required for BREEAM Infrastructure.

Data Scope

This tool allows using of generic data and Type III EPDs. This tool uses CML data and +A2 data cannot be used in BREEAM Infrastructure yet.

Assessment Scope

The scope of the assessment is dependent on the credits you are pursuing.

Credit 7.3.1 Life-Cycle Assessment (Maximum 100 points)

A life cycle assessment (LCA has to be undertaken and used to reduce the environmental impact of the project.

Credit 7.3.2 Environmental Product Declarations (Maximum 17 points)

The suitability experienced carbon or LCA practitioner identifies 10 key products within the assessed asset. Five of these products are specified within the final asset based on the analysis of product-specific, independently verified, third-party Environmental Product declarations.

The EPDs must inform specification recommendations made by the suitability experienced carbon or LCA practitioner and the EPDs relating to the products used in the final asset must be requested and documented.

Credit 7.7.1 Energy and carbon emissions reduction for operation (Maximum 45 points)

The design has considered options for reducing both the energy consumption and carbon emissions of the project during operation, including the option of designing out the need for energy-consuming equipment and the energy requirements in maintenance.

Credit 7.7.2 Implementation of energy and carbon reductions for operations (Maximum 70 points)

Appropriate measures have been incorporated in the design to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions in use and a percentage of the recommended energy consumption reduction has been saved.

Credit 7.8.1 Embodied Water (Maximum 25 points)

An assessment has been made at the design stage considering the embodied water in the materials required during construction. (embodied water is reported as an indicator on the results page in the BREEAM Infrastructure tool).

Create a project and select the right calculation tool

Create a building project and select the 'BREEAM Infrastructure LCA' tool as the chosen calculation tool.

Create your first design and set up your LCA parameters.

More information on that is here: Selecting Project Parameters

Input required material data

Fill in your project information in One Click LCA by entering the design either manually or by importing your data (see different import options here; guidance for data import can be found here). If you need help finding the right datasets for your building materials, check our guidance pages here.

Earthworks and mass hauling can be reported under its own tab, material information should not be added to that tab.

When you enter materials to Construction Materials tab, the default impact stage of these inputs is related to is the product stage A. However, if you want to specify the stage of environmental impacts yourself, it is possible to change the 'Impact stage' from the drop down menu. This allows the user to create constructions with maintenance, repair and site work included under the same section.

Fill in the Construction Site Operations

Fill in your emissions related to the construction process.

Fill in the Use Phase emissions

Fill in your Use Phase emissions, this includes B1-B3, B6, and B7. These are annual emissions.

For B2 and B3 fill in your project information in One Click LCA by manually entering data. More information on that is here: Maintenance and Repair Data (B2 & B3)

Fill in the Calculation Period

This is required to calculate replacements and end-of-life emissions.

Review the results and download the results report

If you are pursuing credits that can have multiple outcomes, ensure you document your achieved reductions (this requires more than one design). Percentile comparisons can be done on the main project page graphs and with the 'compare' function on the results page.
