EPD Generator for Dutch Regulations (NMD) Compliance & Submission Guide

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Overview

The NMD EPD Generator is a specialized solution for manufacturers supplying the Dutch construction market. It streamlines the creation of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and ensures all data is formatted correctly for the Nationale Milieudatabase (NMD).

The Regulatory Transition: Set A1 vs. Set A2

The Dutch construction sector is currently transitioning between two environmental impact standards. Because these sets use different background databases and assessment methods, they are provided as two separate tools within One Click LCA to ensure methodological consistency.

  • NMD Set A1 β†’ Ecoinvent 3.6

  • NMD Set A2 β†’ Ecoinvent 3.9.1

Separating the tools ensures:

  • Correct impact and MKI results

  • Methodological consistency

  • Verification-ready outputs

  • No accidental mixing of A1 and A2 data

Set A1 uses the CML-NMD method, while Set A2 uses the EF3.1 method. Because these are based on different versions of Ecoinvent, results are not directly comparable.

Key Features & Automation

The tools act as a "single source of truth," minimizing manual entry into the NMD Entry Platform and automating the calculation of the Milieukostenindicator (MKI) or "Shadow Price."

  • Automated MKI Calculation: Automatically computes the shadow price in Euros for both Set A1 and Set A2.

  • One-Click Submission Package: Generates a complete ZIP file containing:

    • LCA-Rapport (PDF/Word): A background report (Projectdossier) ready for third-party verification.

    • NMD Score Matrix (Excel): A pre-filled file formatted specifically for the NMD Entry Platform.

    • Submission Helper: Includes "Wizard Data" (product classifications and scaling formulas) to assist with manual fields on the NMD portal.

Workflow: How to Prepare Your Submission

1. Project Setup

When working with NMD calculations, Set A1 and Set A2 must be handled separately. If your project requires both Set A1 and Set A2, add both tools to the project. However, each design must use only one NMD tool.

Typical setup:

  • One design using Set A1 (EN15804+A1 results)

  • One design using Set A2 (EN15804+A2 results)

Do not enter data into both tools within the same design. This prevents mixed results and ensures correct exports.

2. Input and Classification

Enter your product data and select the required Dutch classifications, such as RAW or NL-SfB.

3. Exporting the Score Matrix

Each NMD tool has its own results page and export, aligned with the applicable standard and dataset.

  • Set A2 results follow EN 15804+A2 and use the EF 3.1 impact assessment method, including the full Set A2 impact category set.

  • Set A1 results follow EN 15804+A1 and use the CML-NMD method.

Because the standards, impact categories, and databases differ, Set A1 and Set A2 results are not directly comparable.

For both tools, the NMD Score Matrix (Excel) is downloaded in the same way:

  1. Open the relevant Set A1 or Set A2 calculation

  2. Click More actions

  3. Select Download NMD Excel

Each tool generates its own Score Matrix, aligned with its dataset version and standard.

4. Handling Dual Submissions (A1 + A2)

If you need to deliver both Set A1 and Set A2 results for the same product:

  1. Complete the Set A1 calculation

  2. Download the Set A1 Score Matrix

  3. Complete the Set A2 calculation

  4. Download the Set A2 Score Matrix

  5. Manually copy the Set A1 values into the Set A1 section of the Set A2 Excel file

This is required because:

  • Each tool exports only its own dataset

  • During the transition period, NMD submissions may require both A1 and A2 values in one file

5. Final Manual Steps

  • Naam milieuprofiel: In the NMD Excel export, this field is highlighted in yellow. You must fill this in manually with a consistent name that matches your product submission. The value is not auto-filled because it depends on the NMD submission context.

  • Upload: Log in to the NMD platform and upload the verified PDF report and the finalized Excel Score Matrix.

How to Access
